Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. It promises more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market.

EIC Accelerator Pilot (Former SME Instrument Phase II)

The EIC Accelerator Pilot builds on the SME Instrument Phase II and provides grant-only support as well as support in the form of blended finance (combining grant and equity). The main focus of the EIC Accelerator (SME Instrument) is on market-creating innovations that shape new markets and generate jobs, growth and higher standards of living. Proposed projects typically envisage Technology Readiness Level (TRL) between 6-8; they normally take 12 to 24 months to complete and they can receive between €0.5 and €2.5m in form of grants.

Fast Track to Innovation

The EIC Fast Track to Innovation (FTI) pilot is a fully-bottom-up innovation support programme promoting close-to-the-market innovation activities open to industry-driven consortia that can be composed of all types of participants. It can help partners to co-create and test breakthrough products, services or business processes that have the potential to revolutionise existing or create entirely new markets, under the helm of the new European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot.

Eurostars is a programme that supports research-performing small and medium enterprises, which develop innovative products, processes and services, to gain competitive advantage. Eurostars does this by providing funding for transnational innovation projects; the products of which are then rapidly commercialised

Innovate UK

Businesses can apply for funding to test the feasibility of your idea, research and develop it and demonstrate it in a prototype. Innovate UK funding competitions cover the following industry sectors; emerging and enabling technologies; infrastructure systems;
health and life sciences; and manufacturing and materials. There is also an open programme that is not sector based

Innovation Fund

The Innovation Fund is one of the world's largest funding programmes for innovative low-carbon technology projects. Funded by the European Commmission, it will provide €10 billion between 2020 and 2030 to help the EU reach net zero. There are calls for both large and small-scale projects.

Erasmus +

The Erasmus+ programme aims to boost skills and employability, as well as modernising Education, Training, and Youth work. The seven year programme will have a budget of €14.7 billion; a 40% increase compared to current spending levels, reflecting the EU's commitment to investing in these areas

Competitiveness of Enterprises and Small & Medium-sized Enterprises (COSME)

COSME aims to make it easier for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to access finance in all phases of their lifecycle – creation, expansion, or business transfer. Thanks to EU support, businesses have easier access to guarantees, loans and equity capital.

Big Lottery Fund

The Big Lottery Fund is responsible for distributing 40 per cent of all funds raised for good causes by the National Lottery. Since June 2004 it has awarded over £9 billion to projects supporting health, education, environment and charitable purposes, from early years intervention to commemorative travel funding for World War Two veterans. Funding supports the aspirations of people who want to make life better for their communities and is delivered throughout the UK, mostly through programmes tailored specifically to the needs of communities in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, as well as some programmes that cover the whole UK.

European Structural & Investment Funds

In line with European Union strategies for supporting growth and jobs, these programmes are focused on research and innovation, helping businesses to start up and grow, supporting renewable energy and energy efficiency, strategic infrastructure, tackling poverty through sustainable employment and increasing skills and youth employment.
