Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with over €95 billion of funding available over 7 years (2021 to 2027) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. It promises more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market. The UK will associate to Horizon Europe, meaning UK organisations can apply for this funding.

EIC Accelerator

Part of the European Innovation Council, the EIC Accelerator supports cutting-edge, business-led innovation. It provides blended finance, comprising both ‘investment’ and ‘grant’ components; however, UK entities are only eligible for the grant component. Typically, this should not exceed €2.5m and all innovation activities should end within 24 months. In addition, proposed projects must be at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5 or higher.

Eureka Eurostars

Eureka Eurostars is the largest international funding programme for SMEs wishing to collaborate on transnational innovation projects. It supports research-performing SMEs with research and development to help them gain a competitive advantage; their project results are then rapidly commercialised. Funding for UK SMEs is through Innovate UK. They will cover up to 60% of project costs through grant funding, with a maximum of €360,000 allowed per project.

Innovate UK

If you're a UK-based business or research organisation, you may be eligible for grant funding from Innovate UK. Funding is available for fundamental research, feasibility studies, industrial research and experimental development. Competitions typically cover the following industry sectors: artificial intelligence (AI) and the data economy; ageing society, health and nutrition; clean growth and infrastructure; and mobility, manufacturing and materials. There is also an open programme, Smart Grants, which is open to applications from any sector.

Innovation Fund

The Innovation Fund is one of the world's largest funding programmes for innovative low-carbon technology projects. Funded by the European Commmission, it will provide €10 billion between 2020 and 2030 to help the EU reach net zero. There are calls for both large and small-scale projects.

Erasmus +

Erasmus+ is the EU's programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. The programme has an estimated budget of €26.2 billion for the period 2021-2027 - nearly double that of its predecessor (2014-2020). However, please note that UK entities are no longer eligible for Erasmus+ funding.

Competitiveness of Enterprises and Small & Medium-sized Enterprises (COSME)

COSME aims to make it easier for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to access finance in all phases of their lifecycle – creation, expansion, or business transfer. Thanks to EU support, businesses have easier access to guarantees, loans and equity capital.

Big Lottery Fund

The Big Lottery Fund is responsible for distributing 40 per cent of all funds raised for good causes by the National Lottery. Since June 2004 it has awarded over £9 billion to projects supporting health, education, environment and charitable purposes, from early years intervention to commemorative travel funding for World War Two veterans. Funding supports the aspirations of people who want to make life better for their communities and is delivered throughout the UK, mostly through programmes tailored specifically to the needs of communities in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, as well as some programmes that cover the whole UK.

European Structural & Investment Funds

In line with European Union strategies for supporting growth and jobs, these programmes are focused on research and innovation, helping businesses to start up and grow, supporting renewable energy and energy efficiency, strategic infrastructure, tackling poverty through sustainable employment and increasing skills and youth employment.
