Case Study

Kicking off 2017 with a bang! We hope you've all found time to relax and enjoy the Christmas break, and we wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2017. It is already proving to be a very exciting start to the year for us here at RedKnight HQ. We were informed back in September that the Research & Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) proposal we developed with Cardiff & Vale University Health Board (CVUHB) to Horizon 2020's Marie Skldowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Programme was successful, scoring 93%. Since then, RedKnight has been supporting CVUHB through the Grant Agreement Preparation phase, and the news broke just before Christmas that the grant agreement had been signed by the European Commission, winning the consortium €274,500. The project, due to start in June 2017, is centred around "TALK©", a communication tool developed by Dr Cristina Diaz-Navarro, Consultant Anaesthetist and project lead at CVUHB, which aims to guide multi-professional clinical teams learning and improving quality of patient care and safety together. It is a simple and practical approach to multi-professional structured feedback and debriefing, to be used after unplanned learning events in clinical environments. Debriefing is the process of an individual or team formally reflecting on their performance after a particular task, a shift or a critical event. TALK proposes an easy way to guide a constructive conversation between team members whenever new insights might be learnt from clinical experience. This includes cases or sessions in which things went well, but also near misses and untoward events. Patient safety is far too often threatened by unidentified system flaws, poor practices, weaknesses in team communication and lack of appropriate action after critical events.
