How important is Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in grant funding applications?

About EDI

Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) ensures fair treatment and opportunity for all. It is enshrined in law through the Equality Act 2010, which makes it illegal to discriminate against someone because of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation. These are known as “protected characteristics.”

Research has revealed that the business case for equality, diversity and inclusion is stronger than ever (McKinsey 2020). A diverse team is often more creative, as people with different backgrounds and experiences view problems differently. This can lead to better, more innovative solutions (Innovation Caucus 2020).

It is no surprise that grant funding bodies are trying to build a more inclusive innovation ecosystem. Read on to find out more about the steps they are taking to tackle underrepresentation and promote equality, diversity and inclusion.

Innovate UK

Innovate UK supports diversity and inclusion through a range of targeted interventions, including the Women in Innovation and Young Innovators Awards. They plan to scale up this support over the next three years, according to a set of new measures set out in the Strategic Delivery Plan 2022-2025.

In addition, Innovate UK has recently launched the Inclusive Innovation Awards, which will invest up to £2.5 million per year in inclusive innovations. All winners will receive a £50,000 grant for scale up or development work. More information on the 2022-2023 Awards is available here.

EDI is also an important part of all Innovate UK grant applications, with applicants required to complete an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion survey. Not only this, but applicants must consider EDI in the design of their project. For example, Innovate UK Smart Grants applicants must explain i) any challenges relating to EDI arising from the project, ii) how they have considered EDI in the development and design of the innovation and iii) how they will promote EDI if they need to recruit as part of their project.

Horizon Europe

Perhaps most apparent are the steps the European Commission are taking to promote gender equality in research and innovation. Firstly, all public bodies, higher education institutions and research organisations from EU Member States and associated countries must have a Gender Equality Plan in place to participate in Horizon Europe. You can find more information on Gender Equality Plans here.

Additionally, the EU Prize for Women Innovators provides three prizes of €100,000 each year to the most talented women innovators from across the EU and Associated Countries. They also award three prizes of €50,000 to the most promising young innovators under 35.

Get in touch

EDI is a clear priority for innovation funding bodies, and it is vital that you consider it within your own grant applications. If you are looking for support, please contact us to arrange a free consultation.

Futuresoft awarded Innovate UK Smart Grant to support the future of hybrid working

RedKnight is delighted to announce a successful application to Innovate UK Smart Grants on behalf of Futuresoft Ltd. The cutting-edge software-as-a-service (SaaS) company will receive £347,449 to develop its next-generation hybrid office visualiser platform, Focos-HOV.

The successful application means RedKnight has secured more than £10.5 million since launching in 2015. Mr Dayne Hodgson, Director at RedKnight said:

“We are thrilled that Futuresoft have secured this funding to support a game-changing innovation that will help address challenges we have all experienced over the past two years. We look forward to seeing how this exciting technology develops over the next 18 months and where Futuresoft can take it."

The Problem

When the pandemic began in 2020, the tools and technologies that workplaces needed to operate remotely already existed. The main challenge was adopting them quickly and updating longstanding processes.

For some, remote work has created new job opportunities, offered more family time, and provided options for whether or when to commute. These benefits have made many organisations recognise that hybrid working is here to stay as we emerge from the pandemic.

However, the transition to a hybrid workplace is proving more disruptive than the move to remote work, with many organisations greatly underestimating the challenge. One crucial factor is that the technology needed to create a seamless hybrid office experience remains largely nascent, meaning there is a significant technology gap in the Digital Workplace market.

Immersive technology remains costly and impractical as it requires the use of hardware, such as headsets. While non-immersive technology provides virtual environments with no hardware requirement, current solutions only offer basic collaboration functionality. None currently harness the power of big data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML).

The Solution

Futuresoft’s first-generation product, Focos, enables businesses to operate all their SaaS applications via one single cloud platform, reducing the user’s need to switch between various tabs and windows.

Focos-HOV will build on this technology, harnessing the data collated by Focos and integrating other data sources and AI/ML techniques. The platform will provide an on-screen virtual office environment, showing company members, location, and availability to one another for enhanced remote and office worker awareness. It will enable vital 'unscheduled' interactions between workers to foster creativity and collaboration and reduce unnecessary context switching and interruptions.

Testimonial

Futuresoft said of their Innovate UK Smart Grants success:

"We are excited for the future and how we may positively affect workplace productivity at a time when there has been so much change with working from home. It is great to see Innovate UK acknowledge our ambition and capabilities as a cutting-edge, innovative technology company by awarding us this grant."

Helping companies access innovation grant funding is RedKnight’s core mission. Please get in touch in order to discuss a potential application.

Innovate UK funding: what’s available?

Innovate UK is the UK’s national innovation agency. It supports business-led innovation in all sectors, technologies and UK regions through a range of key funding competitions, including:

Challenge-led competitions

Innovate UK runs regular challenge-led competitions which focus on specific opportunity areas for UK business innovation. Known as the ‘Grand Challenges’, they include:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data
  • Ageing society
  • Clean growth
  • Future of mobility
Open competition

As well as challenge-led competitions, Innovate UK runs Smart Grants – an open grant funding competition that accepts applications from any area of technology. Funding is available for game-changing and commercially viable R&D innovation that can significantly impact the UK economy. The competition typically runs quarterly with up to £25 million available in each round.

Innovation Loans

Innovation Loans were introduced to ensure businesses can access funding at all stages of innovation, with £150 million on offer over the next 3 years. Businesses can apply for loans of between £100,000 and £2 million for late-stage research and development projects with strong commercial potential.

Small Business Research Initiatives (SBRI)

SBRI competitions provide innovative solutions to challenges faced by the public sector. The programme is best suited to small and medium-sixed businesses, as the contracts are of relatively small value and operate on short timescales.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs)

KTPs connect businesses with academic expertise to deliver business-led innovation projects. Each KTP is a three-way partnership between i) a UK-based business or not-for-profit, ii) a knowledge base e.g., a university or college, and iii) a suitably qualified graduate with the capability to lead the innovation project.

International Collaboration

Innovate UK also supports international collaboration. For example, there have been recent opportunities for UK registered businesses to collaborate with organisations from countries such as Canada, Singapore and South Korea.

Innovate UK also funds the UK’s involvement in Eureka Eurostars. Through this competition, UK registered organisations can apply for a share of £2.5m for collaborative research with organisations from participating Eureka Eurostars member countries.
